Grandpa Joe's
French Toast

Everyone has a favorite recipe for French Toast.  This is mine.

About this recipe

You can use almost any bread for this recipe, but I prefer Challah.  More important, all of our breakfast guests have raved about the taste and texture.  When they smile, I smile!

Ingredients

  • Challah
  • eggs
  • unsalted butter
  • whole milk
  • freshly ground nutmeg
  • maple syrup
  • powdered sugar

Directions

  1. Slice the Challah about one-inch thick, one or two slices per person.
  2. Break the eggs, one per slice of bread, into a large bowl.  Add a tablespoon of milk for each bread slice.  Mix thoroughly.
  3. Soak the bread in the egg mixture for about 15 seconds per side.  Remove to a large dish or serving platter.  Dust each slice with freshly grated nutmeg.
  4. Heat 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a 12-inch nonstick fry pan over medium heat.
  5. Add as many bread slices as will fit in the pan (nutmeg dusted sides down).  Now dust the top of each slice with more grated nutmeg.  After about 3 minutes, turn the slices and allow them to cook for another 3 minutes.
  6. Remove to a serving tray, dust with powdered sugar, and serve immediately with (hopefully Michigan) maple syrup!

Notes

  • Be sure to add more butter for the second and third batches, if necessary.
