Grandpa Joe's
Whipped Potatoes

The ultimate comfort food in our household.

About this recipe

As a child, it was always my job to mash or whip the potatoes.  There was no room for error.  Do it right or lose the privilege!  Later in life, my children took on this ominous assignment.  Now, my eldest grandson is in charge.  It brings a smile to ole grandpa's face!

Ingredients

  • 4 pounds Idaho potatoes
  • ¼ pound unsalted butter
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • kosher salt

Directions

  1. Peel the potatoes and halve or quarter each potato so that all pieces are approximately the same size.
  2. Place in a large pot with cold water.  Bring to a boil and simmer, uncovered, for about 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are easily pierced by a sharp knife.
  3. Drain well and mash with an electric mixer at low speed.  When the potatoes are roughly chopped, add the butter and ½ cup of the warmed milk, and mix at medium speed for about 15 seconds.  Continue to add warmed milk, ¼ cup each time, and mix at medium speed for about 30 seconds, until the potatoes are at the desired consistency – creamy and fluffy.
  4. Whip the potatoes at high speed for about 15 seconds to finish.
  5. Cover until ready to serve.  Serves 10 - 12.

Notes

  • Add another quarter to half cup of warmed milk if the potatoes do not whip to the desired consistency after the first cup is added.
