Split Pea and Ham Soup

Rich and hearty. 


About this recipe

Add a slice of crusty bread and you have an entire meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried green split peas
  • 2 quarts water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram leaves
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 smoked pork shanks or ham hocks
  • 1 cup carrots, diced
  • 1 cup russet potatoes, diced

Directions

  1. Rinse the peas in a strainer and place them in a soup pot with the water, salt, pepper. marjoram, onion and ham.  Bring to a boil. 
  2. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for 1½ hours, stirring occasionally.
  3. Remove the ham bones and strip off the meat after cooling.   Slice into chunks. 
  4. Return the chopped ham to the soup mixture with the diced carrots and potatoes. 
  5. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
