Grandpa Joe's
Garlic Bread

I've been making this version of garlic bread since I was in elementary school.

About this recipe

There are probably as many versions of garlic bread as there are cooks.  Everyone has their own, and that's goodness through and through!  I like this one for it's simplicity and freshness.  As you will read in the Notes section, you have many opportunities to personalize this recipe.

Ingredients

  • crusty bread or hard roll (see Notes below)
  • salted butter
  • minced dried garlic
  • pecorino Romano cheese, grated

Directions

  1. Slice the bread about one inch thick.  If you are using rolls, slice them in half.
  2. Generously butter the bread or roll halves.
  3. Sprinkle lightly with dried garlic.
  4. Sprinkle lightly with cheese.
  5. Broil in an oven or toaster oven for 4 minutes, or until the cheese begins to bubble and the bread begins to char slightly.
  6. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Any crusty bread and almost any type of roll will work here.  I sometimes even use hamburger buns.  Soft breads, such as sliced white or whole wheat breads, do not work as well.  They tend to become soft and mushy.
  • Similarly, almost any grated cheese will work, too.  Pick your favorite and you're good to go!
