Cherry Cranberry Sauce

I love cherries, especially sour Michigan cherries.  Combining them with fresh cranberries makes an extraordinary accompaniment to almost anything.

About this recipe

For me, a roast turkey or roast chicken dinner is not complete unless there is a dish of cranberry sauce served with it.  I have also had a life-long affection for sour cherries.  It was a "short leap" for me to attempt combining the two.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups tart cherries, pitted
  • 3 cups fresh cranberries
  • 1½ cups sugar
  • ½ cup cherry juice

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan, dissolve the sugar in the cherry juice over medium heat.
  2. Add the cherries and cranberries and bring to a boil.  Cook, uncovered, until the cranberries begin to pop.
  3. Reduce the heat and cook about 15 minutes longer, or until thickened to the desired consistency.
  4. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Notes

  • When they are available, I recommend using fresh or frozen Balaton cherries.
  • Any fruit juice can be substituted for the cherry juice.
