Brown Rice

A perfect accompaniment to all Asian dishes, plus many more.

About this recipe

Rice is a food staple for nearly half of the world’s seven billion people.  Over 90% of this rice is consumed in Asia, however, where it is a major dietary component.   Being only one of those 7 billion rice-loving folks, I'll cast my single vote for brown rice every time – well, except when I'm making risotto.  Then my vote goes for Arborio rice!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 2¼ cups water
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Directions

  1. Bring the water, butter, and salt to a rolling boil over high heat in a medium sauce pan.
  2. Add the rice.  Lower the heat to its lowest setting, stir quickly once, cover, and do not disturb for exactly 30 minutes!
  3. After 30 minutes, serve immediately.

Notes

  • I highly recommend Uncle Ben's Natural Whole Grain Brown Rice for this dish.  Also, please do not be tempted to use the "instant" or "ready to serve" alternatives, nor the microwave option.  Steaming rice is the only way to get the best flavor and texture from your rice.  Steaming only requires 30 minutes, or about the same time required to cook most Asian main courses.
